A special election to fill a vacancy on Pittsburgh City Council will take place on Nov. 8, the same day as the general election.

The election will determine who will replace Corey O’Connor, who stepped down to become Allegheny County Controller.

O’Connor — the son of former Pittsburgh Mayor Bob O’Connor, who died months after his inauguration in 2006 — had served on City Council since 2012.

He is replacing Chelsa Wagner, the former controller who was elected as an Allegheny County Common Pleas Judge.

City Clerk Brenda Pree said the special election will be held on the date of the general election because the official writ of election will be issued less than 120 days from that date. She said the writ would be submitted Wednesday.

Barb Warwick, of Greenfield, has already launched a campaign for the City Council seat.

The district includes Squirrel Hill South, Regent Square, Swisshelm Park, Greenfield, Hazelwood, Glen Hazel, Hays, Lincoln Place and New Homestead.
