Export man faces drug, gun charges in Plum crash

An Export man faces drug and gun charges after police said he drove into a parked trailer and through a yard in Plum.
Police said Carl D. Helms, 42, was driving a GMC Suburban that was pulling a trailer Sept. 13 when he crashed into a parked trailer. He then drove through a residential yard and came to a stop in a driveway, according to the criminal complaint filed against him.
An officer described Helms as “incoherent but not injured.”
The criminal complaint said Helms had a utility knife in his right hand, which the officer grabbed from him. The officer said a gun also was observed between the driver’s seat and the middle console, and a camouflage backpack that contained a black case “with a suspected narcotic in a plastic bag” also was found.
The complaint said Helms’ pupils were dilated and he appeared to be impaired, but that he denied it. Helms also denied having any weapons.
Helms refused to complete a field sobriety test but was later found to be under the influence of unspecified narcotics while driving, according to the complaint.
Police charged Helms with driving under the influence of a controlled substance, driving with a revoked or suspended license, possession of methamphetamine, illegal gun possession, carrying a gun without a license, carrying a loaded weapon and driving at an unsafe speed.
Helms is free on nonmonetary bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 16, according to online court records.
