Registration open for Plum youth fishing day
Plum has opened registrations for the borough’s annual youth trout fishing day, which will be from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. April 13 on Plum Creek at 1040 Ross Hollow Road.
The free event is open to Plum residents only. Families are asked to bring proof of residency.Those participating should also bring their own pole, bait and supplies. The stream will be stocked with 525 trout.
A registration form is available online through the borough’s website, plumboro.com. There is no deadline to register.

Plum Republicans plan spring dinner
Kim Ward, state Senate president pro tempore, will be the keynote speaker at the Plum Borough Republican Committee’s spring dinner.
The dinner will begin at 6 p.m. April 17 at Pugliano’s Italian Grill, 1808 Golden Mile Hwy.
Additional guests are District 12 Congressional candidate James Hayes and District 45 Senatorial candidate Jen Dintini.

Plum cancels school Monday, April 8 for eclipse
With a solar eclipse set to occur between 2 and 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Plum School District has decided to cancel classes for that day.
The district sent a letter to all district families stating: “To prioritize the safety of our students and staff, we have decided to CANCEL school on Monday, April 8th. After-school activities will start at 5 p.m. Coaches and sponsors will communicate additional information.”
The timing of the solar eclipse coincides with student dismissal at all of the district’s school buildings.
“We recognize that students may be tempted to view the solar eclipse as they leave school, ride the bus or walk home without the proper safety precautions in place, and we want to ensure their safety,” the letter states.
Since the district’s school calendar meets both the instructional days and hours required by the state Department of Education, the day will not be made up.
Riverview sets April 8 early dismisal
The Riverview School District will dismiss students at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, April 8 with all after-school activities postponed until 4:30 p.m.
A solar eclipse is set to happen between 2 and 4:30 p.m. that day, which is the regularly scheduled dismissal times for the district’s schools.
Pull tabs collected for charity
The Plum Recycling Committee is collecting aluminum can tabs as part of the “Million Tab Challenge” benefitting Pittsburgh’s Ronald McDonald House.
Collection containers are at 18 locations in Plum — borough building, community center, EMS building, Holiday Park firehall, Italian Club, John Anthony’s, Lelulo’s, Plum Library, Longwood at Oakmont, Nestbit’s, Oakmont Elks, public works building, recreation desk at the borough building, S&T Bank on Saltsburg Road, Shooti’s, Shop ‘n Save on Golden Mile Highway, Stanford and the Sampson YMCA.
Tabs are taken to a local scrap metal yard and weighed for cash, which is used to support the mission of the Ronald McDonald House. For information, contact Morgan Knox with the Pittsburgh Ronald McDonald House at 412-246-1103.
Plum library to host book sale
The Plum Community Library will be hosting a book sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 13 at the library to coincide with National Library Week, which runs from April 7 to 13.
The cost for a bag of books is $10. All proceeds benefit the library. The library also will be accepting book donations from April 1 to 11.
Plum AARP monthly meeting on tap
The Plum AARP will hold its monthly meeting at noon on Tuesday, April 9, at Unity Community Church. A pizza sale fundraiser will include two slices of pizza for $4 (one plain and one pepperoni slice). Cake and coffee/tea is free. There will be games and socializing.
Members may purchase a $25 ticket for the May luncheon, to be held at Jaden’s 2 on May 14. Membership dues of $15 may be paid at the meeting and are due by May.
Plum AARP is a social/service organization open to residents of Plum, Penn Hills, Monroeville and surrounding neighborhoods.
The club features entertainment or interesting speakers at each meeting, a Christmas party, a May luncheon and an August social, as well as the opportunity for day or overnight trips through Thomas Tours or Louise Grassi tours.
Newcomers are welcome at regular meetings, at noon on the second Tuesday of each month (from September through August, except for June) at Unity Community Church. For more information, call Mary Lou at 724 327-8265.
Volunteers sought for Plum cleanup day
Plum will hold its seventh annual spring cleanup day on April 20.
Individuals, families, church groups, scout groups, athletic teams, homeowners associations, clubs and businesses are being encouraged to participate. Groups and individuals can register on the borough’s website, plumboro.com. Registrations are due by noon April 5.
10th annual ‘Friends of Jupiter’ Pet Walk
Registration is open for the 10th annual ‘Friends of Jupiter’ Pet walk, which will be held April 28 at Tanglewood Shelter at Boyce Park in Plum.
The event is named for Jupiter, a Maltese rescued from a puppy mill. It will start at 9 a.m., rain or shine, with the walk starting at 10 a.m. It includes a basket raffle, pet vendors and local rescues.

Stamp/postcard show on tap
The Wilkinsburg Stamp Club will hold its 74th annual stamp and postcard show at the Holiday Park Fire Hall in Plum. The show will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 12 and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 13.

Free smoke detectors available to residents
State Rep. Joe McAndrew, D-Penn Hills, has teamed up with the American Red Cross to offer free smoke detectors to residents in Plum, Oakmont, Verona and Penn Hills.
The Red Cross also will install the smoke detectors in your home for free.

Car show benefit scheduled for April
The Steel City Chapter of the Heavy Hitters Car Club will host an April 21 car show at the Boyce Park Wave Pool.
It will be from noon to 5 p.m. at 740 Old Frankstown Road in Plum, with special guest host and former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Louis Lipps.
The entry fee is $10 and the event will include food, music, a 50-50 and basket raffles along with awards in seven categories.

Vintage clothing on display
The Kerr Memorial Museum, 402 Delaware Ave. in Oakmont, is displaying elegant fashions of the late 1800s to the Roaring ’20s through the end of August.

Oakmont library offers chess club
A free chess club for kids ages 8 to 19 is available at the Oakmont Carnegie Library.
The class meets from 3 to 5 p.m. Mondays. No experience is necessary, and no registration is required. Sessions will include introducing chess pieces and how they move, opening moves and setups, controlling the center and mid-game scenarios, checkmating and endgame, and chess etiquette.

Group offers support for weight loss
The Oakmont TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) chapter, a support group to help those struggling with weight loss, meets Tuesday evenings at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1261 Pennsylvania Ave. in Oakmont. Meetings begin with a private weigh-in between 5:45 and 6:10 p.m.
