Road name to honor former Plum manager
A Plum road will take on a new name honoring former borough Manager Mike Thomas on April 1.
Old Mine Road will officially become “Mike Thomas Way” on April 1, said David Soboslay, who succeeded Thomas as borough manager.
Thomas, 57, was one of six killed in the Aug. 12 house explosion in the borough’s Rustic Ridge neighborhood.
Old Mine Road runs between Old Leechburg and Renton roads. The borough’s new municipal center is located there as well as its public works facility and the Al Franci Emergency Services Building, which houses the Renton Volunteer Fire Department and Plum Emergency Medical Services.
No events unveiling the new name or signs are currently planned, Soboslay said.
Volunteers sought for Plum cleanup day
Plum will hold its seventh annual spring cleanup day on Saturday, April 20.
Individuals, families, church groups, scout groups, athletic teams, homeowners associations, clubs and businesses are being encouraged to participate.
Groups and individuals can register on the borough’s website, plumboro.com. Registrations are due by noon on Friday, April 5.
Stamp/postcard show on tap
The Wilkinsburg Stamp Club will hold its 74th annual stamp and postcard show at the Holiday Park Fire Hall in Plum.
The show will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, April 12 and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 13.
Dealers will be providing a wide variety of items and will be available to appraise collections.

Masonic Lodge craft fair set
The Plum Creek Masonic Lodge, No. 799, will hold its spring craft fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 20 at its hall, 9521 Saltsburg Road.
Admission will be free.

Car show benefit scheduled for April
The Steel City Chapter of the Heavy Hitters Car Club will host an April 21 car show at the Boyce Park Wave Pool.
It will be from noon to 5 p.m. at 740 Old Frankstown Road in Plum, with special guest host and former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Louis Lipps.
The entry fee is $10 and the event will include food, music, a 50-50 and basket raffles along with awards in seven categories.

Oakmont library offers chess club
A free chess club for kids ages 8 to 19 is available at the Oakmont Carnegie Library.
The class meets from 3 to 5 p.m. Mondays. No experience is necessary, and no registration is required. Sessions will include introducing chess pieces and how they move, opening moves and setups, controlling the center and mid-game scenarios, checkmating and endgame, and chess etiquette.
The library is at 700 Allegheny River Blvd. in Oakmont.

Group offers support for weight loss
The Oakmont TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) chapter, a support group to help those struggling with weight loss, meets Tuesday evenings at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1261 Pennsylvania Ave. in Oakmont. Meetings begin with a private weigh-in between 5:45 and 6:10 p.m.

Greek church to host fleatique
Reservations are being accepted by the Dormition of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church for a fleatique set for 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 13 in the church social hall, 12 Washington Ave. in Oakmont.
