Wanted: Youth Service Librarian

Oakmont Carnegie Library is accepting applications for a dedicated youth services librarian.

The goal of the full-time position is to inspire young minds through literature and learning.

The annual pay range is $40,000- $43,000.

Help for property tax, rent rebate forms

Seniors can get help filling out forms for the state’s property tax or rent rebates from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. April 4 at the Plum Senior Center, 499 Center New Texas Road.

Staff with state Rep. Joe McAndrew’s office will prepare and file the applications. Participants are asked to bring proof of income for 2023, an identification card or driver’s license and a completed rent certificate or paid property tax receipts for 2023.

State lawmakers expanded the program in 2024. The maximum standard rebate increased from $650 to $1,000. Income limits have also been increased, from $35,000 to $45,000 for homeowners and from $15,000 to $45,000 for renters. Moving forward, income caps will rise with the cost of living.

The program is for state residents age 65 and older, widows and widowers age 50 and older, and people with disabilities age 18 and older.

The application deadline is June 30. Rebates begin being paid July 1.For information, call 412-793-2448.

Registration open for Plum youth fishing day

Plum has opened registrations for the borough’s annual youth trout fishing day, which will be from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. April 13 on Plum Creek at 1040 Ross Hollow Road.

The free event is open to Plum residents only. Families are asked to bring proof of residency.Those participating should also bring their own pole, bait and supplies. The stream will be stocked with 525 trout.

A registration form is available online through the borough’s website, plumboro.com. There is no deadline to register.

Plum Republicans plan spring dinner

Kim Ward, state Senate president pro tempore, will be the keynote speaker at the Plum Borough Republican Committee’s spring dinner.

The dinner will begin at 6 p.m. April 17 at Pugliano’s Italian Grill, 1808 Golden Mile Hwy.

Additional guests are District 12 Congressional candidate James Hayes and District 45 Senatorial candidate Jen Dintini.

Pull tabs collected for charity

The Plum Recycling Committee is collecting aluminum can tabs as part of the “Million Tab Challenge” benefitting Pittsburgh’s Ronald McDonald House.

Collection containers are at 18 locations in Plum — borough building, community center, EMS building, Holiday Park firehall, Italian Club, John Anthony’s, Lelulo’s, Plum Library, Longwood at Oakmont, Nestbit’s, Oakmont Elks, public works building, recreation desk at the borough building, S&T Bank on Saltsburg Road, Shooti’s, Shop ‘n Save on Golden Mile Highway, Stanford and the Sampson YMCA.

Tabs are taken to a local scrap metal yard and weighed for cash, which is used to support the mission of the Ronald McDonald House. For information, contact Morgan Knox with the Pittsburgh Ronald McDonald House at 412-246-1103.

10th annual ‘Friends of Jupiter’ Pet Walk

Registration is open for the 10th annual ‘Friends of Jupiter’ Pet walk, which will be held April 28 at Tanglewood Shelter at Boyce Park in Plum.

The event is named for Jupiter, a Maltese rescued from a puppy mill. It will start at 9 a.m., rain or shine, with the walk starting at 10 a.m. It includes a basket raffle, pet vendors and local rescues.

Proceeds benefit various animal rescues.

Volunteers sought for Plum cleanup day

Plum will hold its seventh annual spring cleanup day on April 20.

Individuals, families, church groups, scout groups, athletic teams, homeowners associations, clubs and businesses are being encouraged to participate.

Groups and individuals can register on the borough’s website, plumboro.com. Registrations are due by noon on April 5.

Stamp/postcard show on tap

The Wilkinsburg Stamp Club will hold its 74th annual stamp and postcard show at the Holiday Park Fire Hall in Plum. The show will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 12 and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 13.

Dealers will be providing a wide variety of items and will be available to appraise collections.

Greek church to host fleatique

Reservations are being accepted by the Dormition of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church for a fleatique set for 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 13 in the church social hall, 12 Washington Ave. in Oakmont.

Car show benefit scheduled for April

The Steel City Chapter of the Heavy Hitters Car Club will host an April 21 car show.

It will be from noon to 5 p.m. at the CCAC Boyce Campus, 595 Beatty Road in Monroeville, with special guest host and former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Louis Lipps.

The entry fee is $10 and the event will include food, music, a 50-50 and basket raffles along with awards in seven categories.

Vintage clothing on display

The Kerr Memorial Museum, 402 Delaware Ave. in Oakmont, is displaying elegant fashions of the late 1800s to the Roaring ’20s through the end of August.

Oakmont library offers chess club

A free chess club for kids ages 8 to 19 is available at the Oakmont Carnegie Library.

The class meets from 3 to 5 p.m. Mondays. No experience is necessary, and no registration is required. Sessions will include introducing chess pieces and how they move, opening moves and setups, controlling the center and mid-game scenarios, checkmating and endgame, and chess etiquette.

Group offers support for weight loss

The Oakmont TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) chapter, a support group to help those struggling with weight loss, meets Tuesday evenings at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1261 Pennsylvania Ave. in Oakmont. Meetings begin with a private weigh-in between 5:45 and 6:10 p.m.

PALS to collect baby items at April meeting

The Plum Area Ladies Society (PALS) will have its next monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. April 3 in the Plum Community Center. The meeting will include a baby shower for residents of the Roselia Pregnant and Parenting Support Facility. A member of the Roselia staff will speak about the mission and operation of the facility.

Suggested shower gifts include diapers sizes 3-7; onesies, sleepers and outfits, sizes 12 months to 2T; and baby wash, shampoo, baby wipes and pacifiers. Gift cards to Target and Walmart also are welcome.

After the shower, nominations for next year’s banquet chairman will be accepted and voted on. The top charities members voted on to receive cash donations will be announced, as well as the estimated amount of the donations pending expenses for the May banquet. Payment for the banquet, which is $30, also will be accepted.

Also in April, the monthly Ladies Day out will be a miniature golf outing at Willows Golf & Ice Cream. The date of the outing will be decided later, depending on the weather, and members who signed up will be notified.

PALS is a service/social club open to residents of Plum, Penn Hills, Monroeville and the surrounding communities.
