Students recognized for competition placement

Plum School District officials recognized Oblock Junior High students Kate Henchir, Chris Taylor, Dhruv Thakkar and Mary Bricker at the June 29 school board meeting.

They recently took third place in the Eastern Suburb School Program Association Science Bowl. They competed against 14 teams.

Plum Community Save Lives – Feed Families Blood Drive

The Plum Community Save Lives — Feed Families Blood Drive will be July 30 from noon to 6 p.m. at Plum Community Center, 499 Center New Texas Road.

Church flea market

The United Presbyterian Church of Universal is hosting a flea market from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on July 10. The church is at 2545 Main St. (Universal Road) in Penn Hills.

U.S. Amateur volunteers needed

Online volunteer registration is open for the 2021 U.S. Amateur Championship at Oakmont Country Club.

The competition is Aug. 9-15.

About 400 volunteers are needed to fill positions on more than 15 committees, including marshals, transportation, admissions and disabled services.

Early application allows volunteers to specify their committee preference. Those interested in volunteering should visit oakmont-countryclub.org.

All volunteers are required to purchase the volunteer package for $100, which includes two golf shirts, a ball cap or visor, one volunteer credential valid for the championship and complimentary food, snacks and beverages on the days they volunteer.

Each volunteer will work 16 to 20 hours, or four to five shifts throughout the championship.

Student news

• Jack Farrell (bachelor of engineering in mechanical engineering) and Jordan Cravener (bachelor of science in applied science in civil and construction engineering technology) earned degrees from Youngstown State University.

• Mitch McGowan achieved dean’s list status for the spring 2021 semester at Bucknell University. A student must earn a GPA of 3.5 or higher on a scale of 4.0 to receive dean’s list recognition.

• Makayla Delo was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2021 semester at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Movie in the park

Plum’s Movie in the Park has returned to Larry Mills Park this summer. Movies are planned for July 10 and Aug. 14.

The July 10 film is SCOOB! and will begin at dusk. Drive in and tune into 106.5 or bring your lawn chair or blanket and sit in the grass for this free movie.

The Kona Ice Truck will be stopping by selling its flavored ice. There also will be activities before the screening.

Plum’s Monday Market

The Monday Market is every Monday through Oct. 25 from 3 to 7 p.m. There is no market on Labor Day.

The Market is located at Plum Creek Park (Plum Baseball Fields), 1040 Ross Hollow Road.

Holiday Park firefighters golf outing

Holiday Park Volunteer Fire Department will host a golf tournament July 25 at Meadowink Golf Course, 4076 Bulltown Road in Murrysville.

Registration opens at 7 a.m. Putting green and driving range opens at 8. Shotgun start is at 9.

Other activities include a Chinese auction, competition on designated holes, prizes, box lunch on the course, steak dinner and more.

Cost is $125 per person or $450 per foursome if signed as a group.

Event is limited to 144 competitors. Sponsorship packages are available. They range from $250 to $2,500.
