Plum Borough School District’s previously scheduled Back-to-School Movie Night will go on as planned Saturday evening.

In its second year, the event will kick off at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and include games, food trucks and tables featuring school resources and information. It is open to the public.

Assistant Superintendent Denise Sedlacek is hoping families will attend.

“Now more than ever, it’s a wonderful opportunity for families to come together for games, food, spread a blanket on the football field and watch ‘The Sandlot,’ ” Sedlacek said.

The Plum community is reeling from a deadly house explosion that occurred Saturday, killing six people at 141 Rustic Ridge Drive, including Plum student Keegan Clontz, 12, who would have been an incoming student at the junior high school.

“Counselors and social workers will be on-site throughout the event, along with trauma/grief resource materials for families,” Sedlacek said.

The movie, which will be shown on a screen at the football field, will begin at sunset around 8:45 p.m.

Scheduled food trucks include Dad’s Pub and Grub and Kona Ice.

Evanly Bakes, which sells custom cakes, gourmet brownies and desserts, will set up a table.

“I like to do flavors that you can’t find in the supermarket, like almond raspberry, pistachio and strawberry, to amp up the flavor profiles on things,” said owner/baker Evan Morgan-Newpher.

Newpher and his husband, Jared Morgan-Newpher, moved to Pittsburgh several weeks ago because Jared accepted a French teaching position at Plum Senior High School.

Evanly Bakes will sell two signature desserts at the event, Cosmic Brownies and Raspberry Almond Blondies ($4 each), and offer cake tastings.

Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs.

“The Sandlot” is rated PG and has a running time of 101 minutes.

The movie and games are free.
