Students of Plum Borough School District are set to go back to school on Aug. 18, and several changes should be expected for this year.

Three different areas will have new resources available for students. For science, students in kindergarten through fifth grade will use the Savvas Realize learning management system, the digital home of more than 1,000 interactive programs.

Sixth- through eighth-graders will learn through Savvas’ elevateScience curriculum, which emphasized the inquiry process, problem solving and critical thinking. At Plum Senior High School, resources are available through educational programs from publishing company McGraw Hill.

District libraries will look different, with the high school receiving a new carpet and the middle school undergoing changes in the fall to help promote collaboration. The district also is partnering with Plum Borough Community Library to join the Allegheny County Library Association student card program. In addition, new digital media subscriptions are available for students.

Materials from textbook publisher Goodheart-Willcox are intended to provide a more consistent approach to fitness in middle school and high school students, and the district will use Focused Fitness’ WELNET software, which is designed to provide physical educators with a tool to gather student data and communicate results.

The school district also is introducing Community Connections nights, each scheduled to start at 6 o’clock:

Building Resiliency in Our Children, Aug. 15, high school auditorium. Kevin Honeycutt, an author and keynote speaker, will focus on helping students “build the skill set to survive and thrive during their formative years.”

Mental Health Awareness Night, Oct. 18, high school auditorium, featuring mental health experts talking about the resources that families have available for their children.

Shaping the Way Our Children Use Smartphones, Feb. 7, middle school auditorium. The program is hosted by the company Shape the Sky, which provide educational resources and the necessary tools to teach adults about risky behaviors of the internet and social media

Also, families can enjoy the film “Space Jam: A New Legacy” on Aug. 13 at the high school football field for the inaugural Back-to-School Movie Night.
