A man is at large after robbing a Lawrenceville bank Thursday morning, police said.

The man — who was dressed in dark clothing and was wearing a mask — entered New Alliance Credit Union in the 3700 block of Butler Street at 9:11 a.m., shortly after the bank had opened, bank officials and police said.

The man “flashed a gun and demanded he be given money,” police spokeswoman Emily Bourne said.

A bank employee gave the man “a large amount of cash,” and the man fled the building, Bourne said. Police did not specify how much cash was taken or if any of it was marked with dye packs.

The man had fled by 9:13 a.m., when a bank employee activated the panic alarm, bank officials said in a statement.

No one was injured, Bourne said.

Pat Schimonsky, CEO of New Alliance Federal Credit Union, said they “deeply regret this incident occurred.”

“Our primary focus remains on the safety and well-being of our staff, members, and the broader Lawrenceville community,” said Schimonsky, in a prepared statement. “We are thankful for the swift and coordinated response from law enforcement agencies and are confident in their investigative abilities.”

The credit union closed the Lawrenceville branch Thursday but plans to reopen Friday with normal business hours, bank officials said.

Headquartered in Ambridge, New Alliance Federal Credit Union bills itself as “a dynamic community-based credit union proudly serving Beaver and Allegheny counties.”

Bourne said violent crime unit detectives are investigating, as well as reviewing all available video evidence.

If anyone has any information about the incident, they are asked to call Pittsburgh police at 412-323-7800. They can remain anonymous.
