Somerset man, 80, accused of fatally shooting grandson who came to aid of grandmother

An 80-year-old Somerset County man is being held without bond for allegedly shooting and killing his grandson who was attempting to break up a domestic argument between his grandparents late Sunday.
Ray Edward Supanick of Jenner Township was arraigned on charges of criminal homicide, aggravated assault, harassment, possessing instruments of crime, reckless endangerment and making terroristic threats after the 10:30 p.m. incident in his home along Beam Church Road outside of Boswell.
Trooper Sondra Haberl said in court documents that Supanick’s wife, Barbara, called state police.
The Supanicks’ grandson, Joshua Cale Hillegas, 30, arrived before troopers and attempted to disarm Ray Supanick when he was shot. Troopers took Ray Supanick into custody when they arrived.
Hillegas was pronounced dead at the scene, Haberl said.
Supanick is being held without bail pending a preliminary hearing scheduled June 26, according to court dockets.
