Bogus charity phone calls resurface in Indiana County

State police in Indiana County on Tuesday alerted area residents to a possible phone scam in the form of a bogus charitable solicitation.

Police received a tip Tuesday from an Indiana County resident who reported receiving several recent phone calls from someone who claimed to be representing a “state police” charitable fund allegedly benefiting widows of slain police officers.

A similar call was reported by another county resident late last year, according to state police spokesman Trooper 1st

Class Clifford A. Greenfield.

He advised that state police don’t solicit charitable donations and recommended residents verify the legitimacy of a purported charity before providing any personal, financial or credit card information.
