Flood watch issued for several counties in Western Pennsylvania
The National Weather Service issued a flood watch Tuesday through Wednesday morning for portions of the Southwestern Pennsylvania region, including Allegheny, Armstrong and Westmoreland counties.
Rich Redmond, a NWS meteorologist in the Moon office, said the area may see up to an inch of rain today, with afternoon wind gusts of 25-35 mph until 7 p.m.
“Streams are running high, and much of the ground is saturated or frozen, so any rain is just going to run right off, so that’s a concern,” Redmond said.
According to the weather alert, excessive runoff may result in the flooding of rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying and flood-prone locations.
Tuesday's rainfall, beginning in the morning hours, will exceed an inch in some locations. Redmond said the rain will move out this evening to the southeast and temperatures will remain above freezing through Wednesday morning.
A cold front will move through this weekend, with lows expected in the teens Saturday.
