Costco coming to Washington Mall site

Wholesale retailer Costco is slated to open a location at the former Washington Mall site in South Strabane.

In a social media post, South Strabane Township officials announced the business move as part of plans to redevelop the site bordered by Interstate 70 and Murtland Avenue.

“Costco’s arrival means the creation of hundreds of jobs, with an average starting wage of $30 per hour,” the township said.

It noted the project still must be approved by township supervisors and local zoning and planning bodies.

Washington County commissioners recently told TribLive news partner WTAE most of the mall will be torn down, beginning this summer, to make way for new retail and dining developments..

Closed in 2014, the mall opened in 1968, with JC Penney among its anchor stores.

Boy seriously injured after being struck by vehicle in Butler

A 6-year-old boy suffered serious injuries after being struck by a vehicle Wednesday in Butler, but city police said his prognosis is good.

Police said the boy was flown to Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh with injuries including a fractured skull and multiple broken bones.

The driver, who was visibly shaken, stayed on the scene in the 900 block of West Jefferson Street and is cooperating with investigators, according to police.

Police said the driver was not under the influence of any substance and has not been charged with any violation.

While state police also are investigating, city police said the child apparently darted out in front of the vehicle at about 3:30 p.m., leaving no time for the driver to stop.
