National Aviary welcomes condor

The National Aviary in Pittsburgh welcomed it newest resident yesterday.

A 43-year-old male Andean condor named Bud is the latest addition, arriving from the Dallas Zoo.

Bud will join adult female Lianni and juveniles Marijo and Illiman.

Condors are considered a vulnerable species in the U.S., and are among the world’s largest flying birds with a wingspan of up to 10 feet. They can live to be 50 years or older.

The Aviary is open daily, except Tuesdays, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

1 injured in stabbing in Downtown Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh police are investigating a stabbing Thursday night Downtown.

Police were called to the Medic 14 station on the Boulevard of the Allies around 9 p.m. for a report of a disorderly patient.

They said a man with a stab wound to his back attempted to gain the attention of medics by hitting the window of the medic station, which accidentally shattered.

The man was taken by ambulance to a local hospital in stable condition.

Video footage captured the man coming from the 200 block of Smithfield Street before heading toward the medic station, police said.

Morning fog advisory

The National Weather Service has issued a dense fog advisory until 9 a.m. for parts of Western Pennsylvania.

Dense fog is expected to make driving conditions more difficult in Armstrong, Butler, Jefferson and Forest counties, as well as higher elevations in Indiana County.

“The fog will burn off and some sunshine will mix in through the afternoon,” WTAE Meteorologist Ashley Dougherty said Friday morning. “A few isolated showers can’t be ruled out this evening, but otherwise (it’ll be) mostly cloudy overnight.”

Dougherty said Saturday will be cold and breezy with sunshine in the afternoon. It is forecast to be partly cloudy Sunday, and a bit warmer with evening showers possible south of Pittsburgh.

Pistol-whipping suspect arrested

Pittsburgh police have charged a man they say was one of two masked assailants who robbed an Overbrook business on Feb. 12.

According to police, two men entered the Sky Spa along Library Road, and one of them pistol-whipped a female victim during the course of the incident. She was transported by ambulance in stable condition.

At the time of the incident, the woman told officers she was letting a customer out when two men wearing masks pushed their way inside. She said she saw one firearm before she was hit in the head.

Three customers and four employees were inside the business at the time, but were on a different floor and did not see the attack, police said.

It was not known what, if anything, was taken.

Grayson was arrested Thursday on a warrant connected to the incident.

He was charged with aggravated assault, robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery, possession of a prohibited firearm, receiving stolen property and theft by unlawful taking.

Grayson’s bail was denied. He was taken to the Allegheny County Jail. He faces a Feb. 29 preliminary hearing Downtown.
