Morning Roundup: Man killed in head-on collision in Armstrong County

One killed in Armstrong County crash

A man was killed Tuesday in South Bend Township in a crash involving a tri-axle coal truck.

Nicholas Difilippo Jr., 22, was driving a car at around 6:15 a.m. in the Armstrong County township, when his car crashed head on with a coal truck, said state police.

The crash occurred on Route 156 in South Bend Township. Police said the crash occurred when Difilippo Jr. entered the opposing lane.

It was unclear why Difilippo Jr. entered the opposing lane, according to police.

Difilippo Jr., of South Bend Township, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The driver of the coal truck suffered minor injuries, police said.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Intersection shut down in Bloomfield following crash

An early morning crash Wednesday left one injured and shut down a busy intersection in Pittsburgh’s Bloomfield neighborhood.

The crash happened a little after 4:30 a.m. at the intersection of Baum Boulevard and Liberty Avenue, according to TribLive news partner WTAE.

At least one person was taken to the hospital as a result of the crash, according to WTAE.

The intersection was closed as of 7 a.m. The crashed car was towed away, but a downed utility pole was keeping the intersection closed, according to WTAE.

Drivers are advised to avoid the area. A cleanup effort is underway.

Five escape from Scott Township fire

A late night fire burned through a home in Scott Township on Tuesday, leading five residents to escape.

The East Carnegie, Scott Township Fire Department reported a fire hit a home in the 300 block of Old Bower Hill Road just before 11 p.m. Tuesday.

Five people escaped the fire and are being assisted by the Red Cross, according to TribLive news partner WTAE.

East Carnegie, Scott Township Fire Department station 256 responded to the blaze first, and eventually nine departments responded, said officials.

The fire took four hours to extinguish, according to fire officials.

There’s no initial word on what caused the blaze, and an investigation is ongoing.

Jefferson Hills teen girl found

A teenage girl who was reported missing Monday has been found and returned home safe, said Jefferson Hills Police.

Amira Culligan of Jefferson Hills was reported missing on Monday morning, but police said she was returned home Monday night.
