Here are some of the latest news items from this morning, Tuesday, Nov. 19:
School van involved in Greensburg crash
A school van was involved in a crash in Greensburg Tuesday morning, according to a Westmoreland County 911 dispatcher.
The wreck happened just after 6:30 a.m. at the intersection of Locust Valley Road and Old Salem Road, the dispatcher said.
EMS personnel evaluated people on-site for potential minor injuries, the dispatcher said. He could not provide additional details.
The school van was one of two vehicles involved in the crash, according to TribLive news partner WTAE.
The van was one that transports students from Greensburg-Salem School District, but there were no students in the van at the time of the wreck, said Kayla Tamer, associate to superintendent and coordinator of community outreach for the district.
The driver was uninjured, she said.
Baldwin’s 3 fire companies to merge
Three fire companies serving Baldwin will consolidate into a single organization, effective Tuesday morning.
South Baldwin, Baldwin Independent and Option Independent stations said in a news release the merger “represents a thoughtful and strategic step forward to provide enhanced fire and rescue services to the residents of Baldwin Borough.”
The merger aims to improve coordination, reduce redundancies and respond to calls more efficiently and effectively, the fire companies said.
The merged fire companies will operate as Baldwin Fire Rescue, and vehicles and social media pages will be updated over the next year to reflect the change.
“The unification underscores our unwavering commitment to protecting the lives and property of Baldwin Borough residents,” the fire companies wrote. “Together, we’re building a stronger, more efficient organization to serve our community for years to come.”
This comes as many fire departments, often facing severe staffing challenges, have been forced to merge in recent years.
2 people injured in Butler County crash
Two people were injured in a motorcycle crash involving a deer in Butler County.
TribLive news partner WTAE reported the crash happened around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday on William Flynn Highway in Mercer Township.
Police said the motorcycle was driving south when it hit a deer in the road.
The 22-year-old man driving the motorcycle and the 21-year-old woman who was his passenger were both flown to a Youngstown hospital with injuries.
Police did not release their identities.
State police said neither was wearing a helmet, according to WTAE.
