Police say Beaver County man attacked dog with hatchet

An Aliquippa man allegedly a dog with a hatchet, causing the animal to lose its left ear, police said.

The dog’s owner said David Askew III hit his dog with a hatchet and then ran off Wednesday, according to a criminal complaint obtained by TribLive news partner WTAE.

Police said there is surveillance video of Askew fleeing scene while brandishing a hatchet.

The owner’s dog had emergency surgery, and police said the animal will need more surgery in the future, according to WTAE.

Askew has been charged with aggravated cruelty to animals causing serious bodily injury, a felony, as well as three misdemeanors, including possession of an instrument of crime with intent, according to court records.

The felony charge comes with a maximum sentence of seven years, if convicted.

Butler man wins $1 million lottery at Sheetz

A spur-of-the-moment decision paid off for a Butler man, as he won $1 million from a lottery ticket.

On Wednesday, Jake Parkinson was awarded with a million-dollar check from Pennsylvania lottery officials, according to TribLive news partner WTAE.

“I mean, I had to be there at that exact second buying it,” Parkinson said. “If it was a second later, minute later, minute before, I wouldn’t have gotten that exact number. It was pretty cool. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime type of thing.”

Parkinson, a 26-year-old FedEx driver from Butler, said he purchased a “New Year’s Millionaire Raffle” ticket at Sheetz on New Castle Road in Butler.

He told WTAE that he plans to pay off his house and invest the rest for an early retirement.

The Sheetz store will receive a $5,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.

The Pennsylvania Lottery said the winnings are part of a Jan. 6 raffle that has awarded 6,000 cash prizes totaling more than $5 million. The winning game has created 136 new millionaires, including Parkinson, since it debuted in 2005, said lottery officials.
