State trooper struck during Somerset roadside assist

A Pennsylvania State Police trooper was struck and injured Saturday by a passing vehicle while assisting with a disabled vehicle along Route 31 in Somerset County.

The trooper was treated at an area hospital and was released but “does have a way to go before being back to full duty,” according to a release from the Somerset County District Attorney’s Office.

It wasn’t clear if charges would be filed in response to the crash.

Results of a crash reconstruction effort at the scene and any available video evidence will be considered in an ongoing investigation, the release stated.

“This is a stark reminder of the dangers that our first responders face on a daily basis,” District Attorney Molly Metzgar said in the release.

No injuries were reported Sunday afternoon after a small plane made an emergency landing on Interstate 376 in Beaver County.

Emergency officials told TribLive news partner WTAE the single engine, fixed wing plane landed on the expressway shortly after 1 p.m. because the engine began sputtering and the pilot doubted he could make it back safely to the Beaver County Airport in Chippewa Township.

The plane appeared to have landed between the New Galilee and Chippewa exits.

On Monday, a spokesperson for the Beaver County Airport Authority referred questions about the incident to staffer Tim Nestor, who was unavailable.
