Point Park University will require students to be vaccinated against covid-19 if they want to attend in-person classes or participate in activities this fall, officials announced.

University President Paul Hennigan said the decision to require vaccinations is “based on on the success of the covid-19 vaccinations now widely available, and to protect the University community from the spread of covid-19, Point Park will require vaccinations for all students participating in face-to-face classes or campus activities for the 2021-22 academic year.”

Vaccinated students will not be required to wear a face mask.

Hennigan noted that requiring students to be immunized is not a new policy.

“Point Park University currently requires students to be immunized for a number of other viruses mandated by the federal government including measles, mumps and rubella and meningitis,” Hennigan wrote.

About 3,600 full- and part-time students attend the university.

While the vaccination requirement does not extend to faculty and staff, the university “strongly encourages all faculty and staff to be vaccinated,” Hennigan wrote, adding that the vaccines “have shown to be safe and highly effective at reducing illness and the spread of the virus.”
