Red Cross schedules blood drives across Western Pa.

Last week’s winter storms across the U.S. forced the cancellation of hundreds of blood drives and donations, the Red Cross said Monday. The organization is holding dozens of drives in Western Pennsylvania this week in attempts to make up the difference.

The record-breaking cold and storms canceled events in around 30 states and affected more than 15,000 donations, the Red Cross estimated. The Red Cross is urging healthy people – especially those with Type O blood – to donate.

Blood drives have already decreased in frequency thanks to the covid-19 pandemic, due to public health restrictions to typical venues like schools and businesses, as well as concerns of transmitting the virus in large crowds.

The Red Cross blood drives now include a host of additional safety precautions, including temperature checks, social distancing and mask requirements. Donors are also asked to schedule their appointments in advance – which they can do through the Red Cross Blood Donor App, online at RedCrossBlood.org, or over the phone by calling 800-Red-Cross (800-733-2767).
