Remaining power outages drop as region's heat wave continues
Power outages are gradually decreasing in the wake of this week’s powerful storms that toppled trees and downed electric lines.
As of 11 a.m. Thursday, Duquesne Light had about 750 customers still waiting to have power restored. That compares to about 4,600 customers affected by outages Wednesday afternoon and 85,000 affected during the peak of outages Monday night.
The utility had estimated that all of its customers should have power restored by 1 p.m. Sunday. Many were expected to have their service restored sooner.
Also Thursday morning, First Energy reported about 2,200 outages across Pennsylvania, down from nearly 25,000 at 6 p.m. Monday.
The utility’s remaining area outages included 52 in Allegheny County, 32 in Westmoreland County and 22 in Armstrong County.
Each of the utilities called in extra crews from other areas to help make needed repairs.
As the region experienced a weeklong heat wave of temperatures in the mid-90s, there was an added urgency to get electricity back online, to power air conditioning.
