Some people ventured out to the Pittsburgh Mills mall in Frazer for its first day opening since closing because of the covid-19 pandemic on Friday, June 5, 2020.

Several malls in the region, including the Pittsburgh Mills mall in Frazer, reopened their doors to shoppers on Friday, but two malls have decided to delay reopening for four days.

Westmoreland Mall in Hempfield and Monroeville mall, both owned by CBL Properties, are scheduled to reopen Tuesday, a spokeswoman said.

“We were waiting to make our announcement until the official, signed executive order was posted, which happened last night,” said Stacey Keating of CBL Properties.

She was referencing Gov. Tom Wolf’s amended green phase order, which went into effect at 12:01 a.m. Friday.

Keating said the mall is working on updating its website to include all the protective measures to be in place for shoppers come Tuesday. She said waiting until then to reopen will give the mall’s roughly 150 stores time to “ramp up their operations.”

Others were ready to open their doors to shoppers Friday.

The Pittsburgh Mills mall in Frazer, Ross Park Mall, the Mall at Robinson and South Hills Village all reopened with restrictions in place based on guidelines meant to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

The Monroeville Mall also has retailers with exterior entrances. Some of those stores have been open since May 22, according to its website.

In Monroeville, the mall’s hours will be 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday. In Greensburg, the mall’s hours will be the same, except it will close at 5 p.m. on Sundays.

Simon Property Group, which owns both South Hills Village and Ross Park Malls published a 10-page document on its website Friday outlining protocols in place for its employees and customers.

The mall’s occupancy is limited to 50 square feet per person, events that attract large crowds remain postponed, and social distancing measures will be in place.

Pittsburgh Mills also reopened Friday. A message on its website said all visitors must wear a mask. The few who decided to venture out to the mall did.

Em Lineweaver, 26, and Aubrey Tingler, 30, both of Vandergrift, said they decided to do a little shopping and to check out the mall on its first day open since mid-March.

“It’s about as empty as it usually is,” Tingler said. “There’s only about six or seven people less in this hallway than usual. Covid, I think, is going to kill it.”

Bob Suchevich, 64, of Allegheny Township said he made a loop around the mall to see how busy stores that decided to reopen would be.

“It’s sad. I thought the (Alle-Kiski) Valley would support this place better,” he said. “It used to be a hustling and bustling place. I remember when every storefront was open.”

Several stores within the mall had yet to reopen Friday. Those that did saw only a slow trickle of customers about 3 p.m.

The Mall at Robinson reopened Friday. Its hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.

“Nothing is more important to us than the health and well-being of our Mall at Robinson family and our local community,” reads a May 29 announcement posted to its website. The mall will also adhere to guidelines to mitigate the risk of spreading covid-19.
