The Tower of Voices at the Flight 93 National Memorial in Somerset County has been named the No. 8 Best New Attraction in the nation by USA Today’s 10Best.com.

The Laurel Highlands memorial was selected from an initial list of 20 nominees, which was then pared down to 10 by popular vote. The Tower of Voices, dedicated Sept. 9, 2018, came in at No. 8.

The Tower of Voices is a 93-foot monument made of precast concrete and designed by Los Angeles-based Paul Murdoch Architects. It sits near the entrance to the Flight 93 Memorial off U.S. Route 30.

A distinguishing feature of the tower is the sound created by 40 wind chimes that hang from the inside of the structure.

The chimes, made from polished aluminum, represent the 40 victims of United Flight 93 as it crashed in a field near Shanksville on 9/11. Each one is cut and tooled to produce a certain musical note as wind flows through the tower.
