A boulder marks the spot where United Airlines Flight 93 crashed into the ground near Shanksville. The film’s Sept. 3, 2021, re-release in advance of the 20th anniversary of 9/11 will benefit the Friends of the Flight 93 National Memorial.

Ahead of the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, AMC Theatres and Universal Pictures will re-release “United 93,” the story of passengers who prevented a third terrorist attack and forced the hijacked plane down in a field near Shanksville.

Directed by Paul Greengrass, “United 93” presents the morning of Sept. 11 from the perspective of the 40 passengers and crew members whose actions thwarted terrorists’ attempt to use the plane to attack the U.S. Capitol building or another target in Washington, D.C.

Proceeds from the re-release on Sept. 3 will go to the Friends of Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville. The film will be in theaters for one week, according to the memorial’s Learning Center Coordinator Danielle Miller.

Groundwork at the memorial for the 20th anniversary of 9/11 began more than a year ago. It will kick off Sept. 7 with a series of events, including keynote remarks by former President George W. Bush and former first lady Laura Bush on the actual anniversary.

Tickets are $5, and the film will be showing locally at the AMC Waterfront theater, 300 West Waterfront Drive in Homestead.

Events at the memorial on Sept. 11 will begin at 9:45 a.m. At 10:03 a.m., the time Flight 93 crashed, the names of the passengers and crew members will be read. In addition, the Bells of Remembrance will be rung and a wreath will be placed at the Wall of Names, according to the memorial website.
