The last weekend of summer is arriving in the Pittsburgh region with weather conditions ideal for enjoying outdoor activities.

The National Weather Service in Moon has forecast dry skies and balmy temperatures without an excess of humidity.

Highs in the low- to mid-80s are expected at about 5 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday. But the heat index, which measures the “feels-like” temperature, won’t deviate much from the actual temperature.

That hasn’t been the case in recent summer weeks, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Lee Hendricks.

“The heat index will generally begin rising above the temperature when the temperature reaches the lower 80s and the dew point is 63 degrees or greater,” he said.

During the weekend ahead, the dew point in the region is expected to stay at 63 degrees or lower.

“In August and September, we had a lot of high humidity coming in,” Hendricks said. “Even with normal temperatures, it caused the region to suffer somewhat.”

A generous high pressure system is behind the nice weather that is in store on Saturday and Sunday.

“We have a fairly large area of high pressure dominating really everywhere from Kansas eastward to New York and southeastward to Georgia,” Hendricks said. “It’s going to remain over the region at least for the weekend.”

A weak cold front is expected to bring scattered showers and thunderstorms when it rolls through Monday afternoon and evening, he said. Then, “High pressure will build into the area and keep us dry at the end of the week.”

The high temperatures predicted in the Pittsburgh area this weekend are nowhere near the record highs. Those were 91 degrees on Sept. 17, 1955 and 92 degrees on Sept. 18, 1895.
