What stores are open on Thanksgiving?
The National Retail Federation believes 34.3 million Americans may spend part of Thanksgiving shopping.
Those in Southwestern Pennsylvania who choose to make purchases in person instead of online will find options limited, as many major retailers are planning to keep their doors closed on Thanksgiving Day.
That includes Target, Walmart, Macy’s, JCPenney, Kohl’s, Best Buy, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Home Depot and Lowe’s.
Area malls that will take the day off include Westmoreland, Monroeville, Ross Park and South Hills Village.
On the other hand, some discount chains will be doing business on the holiday.
Big Lots will be open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., featuring deals on Christmas trees and decor and some recliners. Dollar General stores also will welcome customers, though hours may vary by location; check local store schedules at dg.com.
Thanksgiving meal hosts in need of some last-minute ingredients won’t be without options. Giant Eagle and Market District supermarkets will be open — though they’ll close early, at 3 p.m.
Thanksgiving hours at Shop’n Save supermarkets vary by site — including 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Norwin and Youngwood stores and 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant. The Charley Family Shop’n Save stores in Greensburg and Murrysville will be closed for the holiday.
If you’d like your Thanksgiving turkey on a sub, you’ll be in luck, as Sheetz and GetGo convenience stores will be open for regular business hours.
For those who overindulge at the Thanksgiving table, antacids and pain relievers should be a short drive away.
While Giant Eagle pharmacies will be closed, CVS drug stores will be open, with hours varying at specific locations; check the store locator at cvs.com for details.
Save for some locations that are open 24 hours, Walgreens drug stores will close on Thanksgiving Day for the second year in a row.
“This is just one of the ways we’re acknowledging the dedication of our store team members, pharmacists and pharmacy techs,” Tracey D. Brown, chief customer officer for Walgreens, said in a news release. “We heard incredible feedback from team members about their Thanksgiving holiday last year.”
Target, closing on Thanksgiving for the fifth consecutive year, also cited a desire to give employees time at home with family and friends.
All told, a record 183.4 million people are expected to shop during the coming extended weekend, from Thanksgiving Day through Cyber Monday, according to a survey released by the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics. That figure is up from 182 million last year.
“Even though holiday shopping continues to pull forward, some of the busiest shopping days of the year are during the five-day Thanksgiving weekend,” said Katherine Cullen, the National Retail Federation’s vice president of industry and consumer insights.
As indicated by the survey, Black Friday remains by far the most popular gift-hunting day of the period. It’s expected to attract 131.7 million shoppers this year, with 65% of them searching for bargains in bricks-and-mortar stores.
