Sebastian Tan, a rising senior at Sewickley Academy, participated in Bank of America’s paid Student Leaders program, working full-time with the Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium this summer. The week of July 22, the students traveled to Washington, D.C., for a week-long, all-expenses-paid, national leadership summit to learn how nonprofits, governments and businesses collaborate to meet local needs. Tan’s main extracurricular work is in criminal reentry, helping individuals coming out of prison to locate jobs across the country. His work extends to the REFORM Alliance, the Allegheny County Anchored Reentry Coalition, U.S. Department of Justice and more. He’s been recognized by Yahoo Finance, Associated Press and Prudential Financial, among other organizations. Tan also advises the United Nations and National Archives through his work with the SPRING Institute, where he contributes to international policy and criminal justice advocacy. His current research alongside researchers at Harvard, Stanford and MIT focuses on youth incarceration, microfinancing and financial literacy. Aside from academic work, Tan works in his family bakery, My Sweet Lilly, and runs Outside Connection, a platform that helps reentrants find jobs in 17 states and 34 cities across the country.
