For the first time in more than four decades, Shaler will not host its July 4th Community Day celebration.

The decision was made with an eye toward safety, as commissioners are concerned that the size of the crowd would exceed CDC guidelines for events, manager Tim Rogers said.

A post on the township’s Facebook page said “the board has regrettably made the decision to cancel” and that the restrictions placed on community events as a result of the covid-19 pandemic “make it almost impossible to comply with the requirements of social distancing.”

Fireworks will be moved to Sept. 26 during the township’s Fall Fest, depending on state guidelines at that time.

Some social media users were quick to criticize the decision and accused the commissioners of shirking their patriotism.

Others, while seemingly disappointed, said it was the right move to cancel a “township-sponsored mass-congregation party to protect the public health.” Rogers said the July 4th festivities have a long history in the township, dating back more than 40 years, and that the decision was not made lightly.

Primarily, he said commissioners are concerned that if other neighboring communities have already canceled holiday activities, it could result in an even larger crowd at Kiwanis Park, which has limited parking and seating.

“The crowd would exceed both park capacity and our ability to manage that many people and traffic,” Rogers said.
