Local veteran receives surprise 100th birthday parade
A World War II veteran received a surprise Monday as a socially distant birthday parade was held in his honor.
Local fire departments, police, motorcycle groups and family and friends drove along Millennium Court in Bethel Park in celebration of Nick Scarlatelli’s 100th birthday, which is tomorrow. Members of the Bethel Park Fire Company stopped to salute the Carrick native while one played “Taps” from atop the fire truck. Other groups paused to thank him for his service and place American flags in the yard belonging to his son and duaghter-in-law.
In addition to family members, Scarlatelli was joined by friend and fellow veteran Herman Skerlong, who will turn 100 at the end of July. The two have been friends since they were teenagers.
