Emergency crews responded to a train derailment in Baldwin Borough in the early-morning hours of Sunday, Dec. 12, 2021.

River Road in Baldwin was closed between Glass Run Road and Becks Run Road after a Norfolk Southern train derailed early Sunday morning, according to Baldwin police.

Pittsburgh hazmat and police responded to the scene of the derailment, which happened around 4:45 a.m. above East Carson Street in Baldwin, as the train was traveling along the upper set of tracks which runs parallel to River Road.

No one was injured, according to Pittsburgh public safety officials.

Norfolk Southern said the train derailed after striking a rock slide, according to WPXI.

East Carson Street also was closed from Becks Run Road toward West Homestead.

Emergency officials said one of the train’s engineers was able to exit the train after its derailment, and medics freed two others.

Hazmat crews did not find any leakage from the train’s cargo, officials said. The contents of the train’s boxcars was not immediately released.

Baldwin police said the road closures were expected to last up to 24 hours.
