Civil defense boats search Monday for Sudiksha Konanki, a University of Pittsburgh student who disappeared last week on a beach in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.

Clothing belonging to missing University of Pittsburgh student Sudiksha Konanki has been found on the beach in the Dominican Republic where she was last seen Thursday as the search continued Tuesday for the 20-year-old Virginia woman.

Officials in Loudoun County, where she lives, said investigators from the U.S. and the Dominican Republic haven’t ruled out any scenario as they sift through surveillance video, phone records and interviews with those who were last with Konanki on her spring break visit to Punta Cana. The Associated Press is reporting that the FBI has joined the search.

She was last seen just before 5 a.m. Thursday at the Hotel Riu Republica. According to a social media post from Defensa Civil, a Dominican Republic search and rescue force, Konanki was last seen walking on a beach before her disappearance.

Konanki’s sarong-style cover up was found on a lounge chair on the beach, where there were no signs of violence, CNN reported, citing a law enforcement source familiar with the investigation.

Authorities have been interviewing a man in his 20s they believe was the last person to see Konanki, the source told the news outlet.

The man, who is not currently being treated as a suspect, has given various accounts of the last time he saw Konanki, according to CNN’s source.

The man told investigators they both went into the ocean but he felt ill, got out of the water and fell asleep on a lounge chair. He is said to have told police variously that Konanki may have been swept away by a wave, that she may have left when he exited the water or that he saw her walking along the beach in knee-deep water toward where she’d left her clothes.

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office said it has been assisting with the investigation into Konanki’s disappearance. The office has filed for a worldwide police alert for a missing person to be issued in the case by INTERPOL.

While some officials have speculated that Konanki may have drowned, her father, Subbarayudu Konanki, told WTOP-FM, a radio station serving the Washington, D.C., area, that he has asked investigators to look into other possibilities, such as kidnapping or abduction.

Thomas Julia, director of communications for the sheriff’s office, said much of the search effort for the missing student has focused on the waters around Punta Cana — which he noted were under a red flag warning at the time of her disappearance.

“The water was not calm on the day in question,” Julia said.

He said that area has seen drownings as well as assaults and kidnappings.

“Nothing has been eliminated,” he said of the possible circumstances of the student’s disappearance.
