Traffic calming construction slated for Pittsburgh’s Stanton Avenue

Construction is set to begin Tuesday on a traffic calming project on Stanton Avenue in Pittsburgh’s East Liberty and Highland Park neighborhoods.
The city’s Department of Mobility and Infrastructure will construct speed tables, which officials described as “midblock traffic calming devices that raise the entire wheelbase of a vehicle to reduce its speed.” They will be installed on Stanton Avenue between North Highland Avenue and Meadow Street.
Work is expected to last no more than two days, weather permitting, city officials said. Work is scheduled from 7 a.m. till 5 p.m.
During construction, one lane of Stanton Avenue will be closed to traffic. Flaggers will direct traffic, officials said.
According to city officials, speed data indicated more than 30% of vehicles driving on Stanton Avenue travel above the posted speed limit of 25 miles per hour. Officials said the rate of speeding and crash history in the area demonstrated a need for traffic calming.
Parking will be completely restricted in the area during construction, and temporary no parking signs will be posted.
Officials said additional improvements — including transit stop upgrades, safer connections for cyclists and pedestrian crossings — are planned for the spring.
Last October, city crews installed traffic-calming infrastructure, pedestrian safety improvements and a dedicated uphill bicycle lane to a portion of Stanton Avenue in the Stanton Heights neighborhood.
