Two people were injured after the deck collapsed at their Vandergrift home Saturday morning.
Katie Bragg, 34, and Mike Horton, 33, were injured when the deck collapsed around 9:45 a.m., relatives said.
The pair used the deck space every day, said Sophie Bragg, their 11-year-old daughter.
Half of the deck collapsed, but the other half was still standing.
“They just bought this house like, a year-and-a-half ago,” said Gabby Kendall, whose husband is Horton’s brother. “We believe whoever built that deck back there, it looks like the bolts just rotted off and it just snapped.”
Officer Joe Gray of the Vandergrift Police Department said they found the pair “on the ground beside the collapsed deck, suffering injuries” when they arrived at the scene just before 10 a.m. Bragg had broken bones, Gray said, and Horton had a contusion on his head, and possibly broken bones.
Both complained of shortness of breath, Gray said, which could point to broken ribs.
The pair were able to remove themselves from the fallen deck, he said, and were taken by ambulance to Forbes Hospital in Monroeville.
Kendall said both left the scene in neck braces, but the family had not heard any updates on their conditions as of around noon Saturday.
“They fell a good 8 to 10 feet,” Gray said.
