Two people were burned in a fire that was quickly extinguished Friday evening in Tarentum.

First responders were called to a home in the 400 block of East Seventh Avenue shortly after 6:15 p.m. for a report of a structure fire.

They arrived to find two women who’d been burned in a grease-related cooking fire, according to Eureka Hose Company Chief Brad James.

“The biggest problem we had were the dogs,” said Terry Chambon, chief for lead company, Highland Hose. “Once the police got them out of the way, we were able to get in there and ventilate things.”

Both women were transported to UPMC Mercy hospital with moderate burns, James said.

Chambon said it appeared that the women picked up cookware containing the grease fire and attempted to take it outside.

“My guys said there were burn marks all the way from the kitchen to the front door,” he said. “People need to learn: when you have a grease fire, smother it. Put a lid on it, or they even make these new blankets now that you can buy.”
