New Kensington City Hall is in the foreground of this aerial view of the city’s downtown, where 30 small businesses will participate in the fourth annual Shop Small Crawl on Saturday, Nov. 30.

New Kensington’s take on Small Business Saturday, the Shop Small Crawl, features businesses that are brand new and others that are long-standing.

The 30 downtown businesses participating in the fourth annual event range from Eazer’s Restaurant, founded in 1918, to Evanly Bakes, opening for its first day.

Hailey Sabot and Daisy Lamberson opened Wildflower Bakery on Nov. 16, wanting to be up and running for Thanksgiving and the crawl, which will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“We’re definitely super excited to see everybody,” Sabot said. “We’ll definitely have something to give out to people for Saturday. We’re super excited to be part of it.”

Saints & Sailors Art Collective has been open since February 2021 and has participated in the crawl each year. On Fifth Avenue, the tattoo shop also features local artwork.

Owner Linzy Michelle, who appeared on the 10th season of the reality show “Ink Master,” said she will be offering a $25 bonus gift certificate for every $100 spent.

“That can really go a long way toward the cost of a tattoo,” she said.

Maps for the crawl will be available at Sweet Tillies, Trovo, Steel Cup and Voodoo Brewing.

“Our small businesses have been working very hard in the lead-up to this event, and all are excited to welcome visitors who can expect to see special officers, discounts and complimentary items,” said event organizer Michelle Thom, operations manager of Voodoo and Olde Towne Overhaul.

The participating businesses primarily are along Fifth Avenue, with some on Fourth Avenue, as well as Seventh, Ninth, 10th and Barnes streets.

They are separated into four zones — Candy Cane Lane, Evergreen Avenue, Butterscotch Bend and Peppermint Path. To be entered in a raffle, shoppers need to collect at least five stamps in each zone before returning maps to Voodoo.

Each business has donated prizes ranging from $25 to $200 for the raffle, which will be divided into various prize packages, Thom said. Shoppers can choose their preferred prize package and submit their completed map.

“As a special bonus prize for those visiting and receiving a stamp from every single business on the map, we have $30 gift cards from 11 of the businesses,” Thom said. “While no purchase is necessary to enter the raffle, every dollar spent at our small businesses will help support local employees, local suppliers and more local spending and investment.”

Shoppers also may participate in a friendly competition among the businesses by voting on their maps for best atmosphere, best overall experience, best food/dessert and best special.

“The winning businesses receive the award to proudly display until next year,” Thom said.

Ashley Bodycombe is among business owners who have participated in the crawl every year. She opened Ashley’s Kitchen in 2021.

She will be offering a special drink, something festive with cranberry, she said, along with a grab-and-go assortment of her stuffed breads and a buy-one, get-one-half-off deal.

“All the businesses are amazing, and it’s good to see people, new faces and old faces, and it’s nice to see people supporting small businesses,” Bodycombe said. “It’s a fun experience. It’s a real fun day for everybody to walk around and see what we have to offer.”

Those worried about consuming too many holiday calories might want to stop by Shayle Prorok’s indoor cycling studio, Rhythm Ridez. She opened in August 2023.

“It’s been going well. We’re growing. We keep adding new classes and new class times,” she said. “What I found is that having a variety of class times and class lengths seems to be working.”

In addition to having hot chocolate and candy canes, Prorok said she will be offering a 20% promotion code and gift certificates.

“I’ll be there in my workout clothes in case anyone wants to see a demonstration or hop on a bike,” she said.

The Shop Small Crawl gives everyone an opportunity to support local small businesses, Mayor Tom Guzzo said.

“It also gives a chance for people to come down, patronize our established businesses and visit all of the new businesses in our downtown district,” he said. “Small businesses have played a huge role in downtown New Kensington’s revitalization. It is very important that we support them on Small Business Saturday and every day.”
