All three cross-filed candidates for Kiski Area School Board’s two Region I seats will appear on the November ballot, if the unofficial vote count from Tuesday’s primary holds up.

Two nominations were up for grabs in both the Republican and Democratic primary races.

In the GOP race, incumbent Kathleen Snyder emerged as the top vote-getter with 650 and challenger Todd Sterlitz finished second with 631 votes, according to the unofficial results from all of Region I’s precincts. Incumbent Mark Flemm Jr. finished third with 532 votes, the unofficial tallies showed.

On the Democratic side, Snyder again finished as the top vote-getter with 480 and Flemm finished second with 390 votes, according to the unofficial results. Sterlitz finished third with 381 votes, the unofficial tallies showed.

“I am humbled by the faith of the community and honored that they voted for me,” Snyder said. “I’m looking forward to the election in November and asking for everyone to vote for me again.”

Sterlitz said he was pleased with the election results but anxiously waiting for the counting of all mail-in ballots to be completed. The Westmoreland County election results website has said mail-in ballots would take several days to count and upload.

Sterlitz said running against incumbents is more difficult.

“It’s tough running against incumbents because it’s an easy vote for people — they know them. I’m very pleased and surprised with the support I received from the community,” Sterlitz said.

Flemm said he’s happy to see so many people interested in the school board race.

“We need people in our area to participate and be involved with our school. As I said a few weeks ago, we have a lot of exciting things going on, and I would be extremely grateful to continue to be a part of the process,” Flemm said.
