Allegheny County Police warn of phone scams

Allegheny County Police want to warn people about a phone scam soliciting money with threats of arrest.

County Inspector Andrew Schurman said multiple residents have reported receiving such calls the past few days.

“In one reported instance the caller requested money from the recipient for prepaid calling cards,” Schurman said. “He told the recipient that she would be arrested by an officer from the Allegheny County Police if she did not comply. The Allegheny County Police will never make solicitation phone calls. If you receive a call of this nature, simply hang up.”

He said the number used by scammers, 412-473-1200, belongs to the county police but has been spoofed by the caller.

Anyone who has received a phone call of this type is asked to call the Allegheny County Police tip line at 833-255-8477 or go to one of the regional county police stations.

County police can also be reached via Facebook and Twitter.
