Democratic presidential candidate former Vice President Joe Biden speaks at in Phoenix on Oct. 8, 2020, to kick off a small business bus tour.

A caravan and rally are being held in the Alle-Kiski Valley this weekend in an attempt to drive up support for Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and his running mate, U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris.

Harrison’s Rachel Miller created a Facebook group called “Local Biden-Harris Rally” to drum up support for the event, which she said was organized in response to a President Trump reelection rally that took place earlier this month.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Miller’s group had more than 500 members. Miller on Monday said she expects around 200 people to participate.

The caravan will start around 11:15 a.m. Saturday at Harrison Hills Park. From there, the caravan will travel along Freeport Road through Harrison, Brackenridge and Tarentum before getting onto Route 28 at the Tarentum exit (Exit 14) and heading north to the Freeport/Millerstown exit (Exit 16). The caravan will then circle back to Harrison Hills Park.

Miller said a rally will start at noon at the park’s Laurel and Broken Branch pavilions. Attendees will be required to wear masks and social distance.

“My main purpose for starting this was to get a sense of community and to make people feel like they’re not alone or unsafe in this area,” said Miller, 26.

Autumn Monaghan, chairwoman of the Harrison Township Democratic Committee, said the event is a way for like-minded people to come together, much like Trump supporters did earlier this month at the Heights Plaza in Harrison.

“It’s fantastic when young people want to get involved,” Monaghan said. “I think it’s great what (Miller’s) doing.”
