Charity event in Vandergrift to offer free back-to-school haircuts for kids
A new charity event in Vandergrift is making the cut with area students.
The Kiski Valley Lancers & Ramsey’s Place Cuts 4 Kids will offer free back-to-school haircuts to any student in prekindergarten through 12th grade at the borough’s Kennedy Park on Aug. 23.
“There’s a lot of underprivileged people in the area and we at KVL wanted to give back to the community,” said Kyle Harris, president of the youth football organization.
Friends for more than 20 years, Harris and Ramsey’s Place owner and barber Nicolas Nabors decided to team up to offer the free cuts.
LeBryn Smith, 17, of Allegheny Township attends Kiski Area High School and is the quarterback on the football team.
“This is good because kids that maybe can’t afford a $30 haircut can get a free one,” Smith said of the event.
Harris, 52, of Vandergrift said about 25 students have preregistered for haircuts.
Vandergrift Council approved the event using the stage area in Kennedy Park.
Nabors, 33, of Vandergrift graduated from the Barber School of Pittsburgh and opened up Ramsey’s Place, in honor of his son, last year.
“This is for any kid that can’t afford a haircut,” Nabors said. “A lot of parents are saying that this is a nice thing.”
Nabors said he’s recruiting two other barbers to volunteer their services for 10 hours.
“He was all over it on board,” Harris said of Nabors’ enthusiasm to offer his barber services for free.
Nabors said tips will not be accepted.
“It’s totally free,” Nabors said.
The Kiski Valley Lancers organization will operate a concession stand with snacks and drinks for sale during the event.
Preregistration is required, but organizers said no child will be turned away.
