An Oakmont contractor knocked $1,000 off the final bill to restore a veterans’ monument in front of Lower Burrell’s Stewart Elementary School.

The monument for residents who served in World War II toppled over earlier this year. The office of state Rep. Bob Brooks, R-Murrysville, headed up the monument restoration project.

The project wound up costing about $8,500, but Oakmont’s FPF/Conidi Construction and Landscaping decided to knock $1,000 off its bill for doing stone work, according to Eric Felack, Brooks’ chief of staff.

“I told them, ‘I’ll help you out.’ Why not, anything for the monument. It’s an old piece of history,” said Giacomo Veneziano, co-owner of FPF/Conidi Construction and Landscaping.

The 70-year-old monument is made of sandstone with a nine-foot bronze plaque and displays the names of U.S. soldiers who served in World War II from what was then Lower Burrell Township. The monument was erected in front of Stewart Elementary in the late 1940s, according to Felack.

Aside from the work done by FPF/Conidi Construction and Landscaping, Mike’s Bronze Restoration of Finleyville cleaned and sealed the stone to guard against weathering, Felack said.

Restoration work was completed this fall and the monument was dedicated on Veterans’ Day.

Brooks kicked in $3,100 out of his own pocket, Lower Burrell contributed $1,355 and Lower Burrell VFW Post 92 and Lower Burrell American Legion Post 868 each gave $1,500, according to Felack.
