Firefighters work to extinguish a blaze at a duplex Monday morning along Cedar Ridge Drive in Allegheny Township. Responding fire departments included Hyde Park, Markle, Vandergrift, Upper Burrell, Lower Burrell and Allegheny Township.

A senior citizen is displaced after a Monday morning fire at a duplex in Allegheny Township.

A fire broke out about 8:49 a.m. in the kitchen area of a patio home in the 600 block of Cedar Ridge Drive, Allegheny Township police Chief Duane Fisher said.

Fisher said a neighbor called 911 to report the blaze, and both occupants fled the duplex without injury.

Fighting back tears, the two female residents declined to comment as they watched fire crews tend to the blaze from a neighbor’s front lawn.

The other side of the duplex sustained damage from the fire but is safe for occupancy.

Fisher said he and other township emergency officials were first on the scene and found a fully engulfing fire.

One cat was located alive, but another cat was later found dead.

Fisher said the cause of the fire is undetermined and is under investigation.

“We are happy that everyone got out without loss of life,” Fisher said.
