West Deer man recognized by community for exemplary service at Family Dollar
A West Deer woman wanted to give a shout-out to a Family Dollar employee for being friendly and having a knack for customer service.
Sonya Dembowski took to Facebook to offer the praise to Collin Slack, manager at the Family Dollar store in West Deer’s Russellton section.
“Big shout out to the Momma of (the) young man who works at the Family Dollar in Russellton. Always well spoken, well mannered and polite,” Dembowski wrote on the social media app. “Kudos to the mom who raised him right! We need more young go getters in retail like him.”
Dembowski shared the message in the West Deer/East Deer Current Events public Facebook group.
It received more than 440 likes and 65 comments as of Thursday.
All of the comments are positive.
“I have told him before that he is the most polite person that has ever waited on me, anywhere,” one person wrote. “He is super respectful and nice.”
“I know who you are talking about, and I am always impressed,” another person wrote. “You always remember when someone like that waits on you. I always mention it to my kids when they are with me. He could be a manager!”
“I always think of how polite and nice he is,” still another person wrote. “I’ve never heard him NOT be pleasant and respectful!”
Slack, 24, of West Deer has been working at the store for about three years. He started as a cashier before making his way up to manager.
Slack doesn’t know Dembowski personally, other than seeing her in the Family Dollar store.
Dembowski is the owner of the Free Store, which recently moved into the complex.
Slack said it feels good to get a compliment from a stranger just for doing his job.
“I’m glad to know that I’m doing my job well, and the things that I do at work do make an impact on people, even though it doesn’t seem like it,” Slack said. “Some people take home that good attitude that you give to them whenever they come in.”
Dembowski said Slack politely greets everyone who comes in and offers to help.
He treats every customer the same no matter what kind of day he’s having and exudes positivity, Dembowski said.
“I just thought it was something that should be brought up,” Dembowski said. “We don’t see that often anymore, and people like that should be recognized.”
One of the commenters identified herself as Slack’s mom.
“Thank you everyone that have said all these kind things about my son Collin Slack. I appreciate all your kindness!” she wrote. “He’s an amazing young man!”
Slack said he enjoys working at the store because it’s close to home and he’s familiar with the customers.
Slack said he never lets personal problems or the fact he may be having a bad day affect his attitude at work.
“I keep that to myself. I go home, and I deal with that. I don’t do that whenever I’m at work,” Slack said. “I’m there to do my job and make sure everybody’s having an excellent experience.”
