Good weather jump starts multi-million dollar Lower Burrell City Hall project

The sunny skies on Thursday brought out the bulldozers and more to Lower Burrell’s city hall where contractors started work on a new public works building.

The work is part of a $3.1 million project including the expansion of the police department, moving the tax office back to city hall and updating the city’s administrative offices.

Originally, the work was to start next week. But the stretch of good weather Wednesday and Thursday was good reason to start early, according to Mike Nedley, Lower Burrell’s code enforcement officer and project coordinator.

The bulldozers arrived on Wednesday and the first phase of the project was underway Thursday: Grading and installing drainage for an about 6,000-square-foot public works pole building on the former basketball/ice skating rink across from city hall.

Depending on the weather, construction of the public works building will continue into late September, according to Nedley.
