Gordmans store at Allegheny Township’s Hyde Park Plaza to close

Hyde Park Plaza in Allegheny Township is losing another tenant.
Gordmans, previously Peebles, advertised a liquidation sale with discounts of 50% to 70% and was selling off store fixtures such as shopping carts, shelving, copiers and employee lockers. Its parent company, Stage Stores, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May.
The Houston-based company has said the covid-19 pandemic contributed to financial problems that led to the bankruptcy filing.
Other Gordmans stores in the Pittsburgh area include ones in East Huntingdon and Belle Vernon. There are 720 nationwide.
Management at the Allegheny Township store declined to comment or provide a closing date. Messages left with the company’s corporate office were not returned.
The impending closing will leave yet another empty storefront in Hyde Park Plaza, which once housed tenants such as Big Kmart, GNC and Radio Shack. Gordmans had replaced Peebles in mid-February after it closed.
Details on store liquidation sales at Gordmans, which brands itself as an off-price department store, can be found at gordmans.com.
Mary Lou Beech, 86, of Lower Burrell said she was “shocked” to see a giant store-closing banner hanging outside Gordmans last month when she pulled into the parking lot.
“I’m disappointed,” she said. “I don’t shop online, and I was here last when Peebles was open. We thought it was a nice day to come out and shop, and here we are … finding this out.”
Beech lamented the lack of retail clothing options in the Leechburg and Lower Burrell areas.
“Where am I going to shop now? I may be forced to go to Monroeville or the (Pittsburgh) Mills (in Frazer),” Beech said.
Steve Koenig of Washington Township made a quick stop into Gordmans to find a pair of shorts.
“It’s sad, the closing, because you lose that convenience,” he said. “I don’t like to see this. It’s a shame.”
