A Harrison man who was out of jail on bond after being accused of aggravated assault was accused of using a crutch to assault an Allegheny Valley Hospital officer who, police say, tried to stop him from driving while intoxicated.
Brandon Heath Gregurich, 29, of the 900 block of Jefferson Avenue was charged with a felony count of aggravated assault, along with simple assault, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and harassment.
Gregurich was being detained in Allegheny County Jail in lieu of a $25,000 cash bond, according to court records. He faces a preliminary hearing before District Judge Carolyn Bengel on Wednesday, Dec. 14.
Police wrote in a criminal complaint charging Gregurich that he appeared intoxicated and became confrontational with a security guard who tried to prevent him from entering the hospital Dec. 4.
When a hospital police officer came to assist, Gregurich told them he would leave, the complaint said.
The officer told Gregurich he wouldn’t allow him to drive because he saw him enter the hospital parking lot with the headlights off, and the smell of alcohol on his breath indicated he was intoxicated, the complaint said.
Gregurich refused the officer’s offer to call someone to take him home, police said.
When the officer tried to write down the registration information for the vehicle, Gregurich ordered him to get away from his car and then swung a crutch at the officer, the complaint said.
The crutch hit the ducking officer in the shoulder, police said.
Police said Gregurich resisted and broke free from the officer when he tried to handcuff him and place him under arrest.
A security guard stopped Gregurich, who continued to struggle until the guard and officer were able to take him into custody, the complaint said.
Court records show Gregurich was charged Oct. 14 by Pittsburgh police with three counts of aggravated assault and a count of disarming a law enforcement officer, which are felonies. He also was charged with public drunkenness, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and harassment.
He was released from custody the following day after posting a $25,000 unsecured bond, court records show.
A preliminary hearing on those charges also is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 14.
