Hulton Road opening could be delayed

A section on Hulton Road that has been closed since July is expected to reopen as soon as Thanksgiving, but could go into December, according to a PennDOT official.
Steve Cowan, a PennDOT spokesman, said some utility relocation work could delay the Thanksgiving goal. He also said crews will need to come out again in the spring to add a final, smooth layer of asphalt when the weather is warmer.
A landslide damaged the road in February 2018, when it was restricted to one lane of traffic. Repair work began July 1, which closed the road between Iowa Street and Michael Drive.
Traffic has been detoured.
Drivers starting north of the slide and trying to get south of it are advised to take Coxcomb Hill Road, make a right on Logan’s Ferry Road, a right on Leechburg Road and then go right back onto Hulton Road. That detour is the exact reverse for drivers going the other direction.
The $3.4 million project is being worked on by Charles J. Merlo Inc. of Mineral Point, Pa. It has been dubbed the Hulton Road Slope Stability Project and includes 700 feet of reconstruction on the road and shoulder along the embankment and the installation of a retaining wall.
Other work on the road included paving, drainage improvements, guide rail updates, pavement markings and other miscellaneous construction.
The landslide was one of 85 in the Allegheny, Beaver and Lawrence counties occurring in Spring 2018. In Allegheny County alone, several slides caused nearly $22 million in damages.
