Large, costly hole appears on Leechburg street

Leechburg Council has a unexpected road repair on its hands, and all they know right now is that it’ll probably be expensive to fix.
A gaping hole on Second Street and Center Avenue is the result of what Leechburg Mayor Wayne Dobos called a “storm sewer issue.”
“The brick manhole started to collapse and the earth around it with it. I think it’s going to be an expensive fix,” Dobos said, estimating the work would cost thousands of dollars. “We don’t know how much more digging to get the pipes connected it will take.”
Dobos said the damage extends more than 7 feet deep. The borough will pay for repairs from the sewer users fee.
Council approved the repairs during Monday’s council meeting and Bier Excavating of Apollo began the repairs Wednesday. Work is expected to be completed sometime next week.
Dobos said the road would be closed one day next to clear the way for workers to make final repairs. As of Friday, he didn’t know which day the road would be closed.
Cars have been allowed to drive around the temporary fix, in which the hole is covered by metal plates and temporary asphalt has been put around the work area.
