All Leechburg Area School District buildings were placed on lockdown for a portion of the day Monday after school officials learned about a threat that was made on social media, according to the superintendent.

Superintendent Tiffany Nix notified parents about the lockdown in a voicemail.

“We are in a lockdown situation in all buildings,” Nix said. “No one is presently in danger.”

Nix said the lockdown lasted from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

In her initial voicemail announcing the lockdown, Nix told parents that police were “in an active investigation” and that students would remain in lockdown “until I know for sure that there is no external threat to the internal function of the district.”

She noted the threat originated from outside the district.

When the lockdown was lifted, a second voicemail was sent by Nix to parents providing them with additional details about what happened.

“We were in lockdown because of a very serious Snapchat threat to our schools,” she said. “We knew that the threat was external and not internal. This means the students in the school were not in danger, which I indicated in my (first) message.

“The reason for the lockdown was to keep any doors from opening that could allow the danger in,” Nix said. “The perpetrator is no longer an active threat to the school.”

Leechburg police could not be reached late Monday afternoon for information about the nature of the threat and whether anybody had been arrested in connection with the incident.

Nix said the schools will resume normal operations Tuesday.
