The annual Light the Season holiday kickoff event is returning to Allegheny Township.
Light the Season begins at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, at the Allegheny Township Municipal Complex.
The community gathering has been on hiatus since 2019 because of ongoing covid conditions and construction on the township building.
Township Manager Greg Primm said the event is open to anyone needing a “little holiday spirit.”
Santa will kick off the night when he arrives via firetruck at 6:30 p.m.
Markle Volunteer Fire Department and Allegheny Valley Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 will have firetrucks on hand for a meet-and-greet.
Complimentary hot chocolate and cookies will be offered by the Allegheny Township Community Club, a mostly female senior citizen volunteer group that meets monthly at the township building.
Attendees can enjoy Christmas music, an official tree lighting and crafts for children.
Township Supervisor James Morabito said he is hopeful everyone will come out to enjoy an evening of festive socializing.
“Everyone is invited. Help us to kick off our holiday season festivities, and we’re looking forward to seeing everyone there,” Morabito said.
The event began in 2016 and is held rain or shine. Parking is free.
Primm noted the new township building can accommodate a large crowd, and the event usually draws around 150 people.
Township employee Lee Schumaker has organized a toy drive and will be accepting new, unopened toy donations during the event.
All donated toys benefit local children in need.
Toys may be dropped off from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays through Dec. 16 at the Allegheny Township Municipal building at 136 Community Bldg. Road, Leechburg.
