Western Pa. libraries gearing up for eclipse with free glasses, activities

Here is a list of upcoming programs across the region focused on the April 8 solar eclipse:

• March 18: Pre-eclipse event at 6 p.m. Mt. Pleasant Area Library, 120 S. Church St. Registered attendees will receive eclipse viewing glasses. Families with multiple children should register each separately to ensure they receive glasses. The event will feature eclipse-themed activities and crafts. Register by calling 724-547-3850.

• March 19: Solar eclipse program with the Norwin Science Club, 6 and 6:45 p.m. at the Norwin Public Library, 100 Caruthers Lane, Irwin. The program’s 6 p.m. session is for children in kindergarten through third grade. The 6:45 p.m. session is for grades 4 through 6. No cost to attend. Registration required by calling 724-863-4700.

• March 28: Solar eclipse paper circuits, 6 p.m. at Greensburg Hempfield Area Library, 237 S. Pennsylvania Ave. in Greensburg. Make your own paper model of the eclipse using an LED light and battery. Participants also will receive eclipse viewing glasses. No cost to attend. Registration required by calling 724-837-5620.

• April 8: Solar eclipse viewing at Murrysville Community Park, 4056 Wiestertown Road. Meet at Field 6 at 2:30 p.m. for an afternoon of eclipse activities and games. Families will receive eclipse viewing glasses. The Murrysville Community Library, 4130 Sardis Rd., also will be giving out viewing glasses beginning March 30. No registration required. • April 8: Solar eclipse viewing hosted by the Spring­dale Free Library at 2 p.m. It will be at Desmond Field, on Marion Avenue across from the Springdale High School parking lot. The library has a limited number of glasses to hand out on a first-come, first-served basis. For more, call 724-274-9729.
